Goodness, I haven't updated in a super long time!!  I definitely want to thank God for the TON of blessings He's showered me with recently.

I had my FIRST real job interview on January 22nd for a new grad RN program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. I was definitely aiming for the Hematology Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant unit, and I obsessively checked Stanford's website EVERY SINGLE DAY until the job posting was listed (and by obsessive, I mean logging onto their website ~5 times a day).  I was definitely nervous going into the interview since I hadn't had any prior interview experiences to build off from, haha, and it was a miracle that I was even able to get this opportunity to talk to the nurse managers!!!

How I See God's Hand at Work:
1. My 2nd year of nursing school, I had to apply to hospitals for my nursing preceptorship, which is like a required internship before they hand you your diploma. I choose UCSF as my #1 choice, but the placement instructor, Teri, says I should apply to Packard because it's the most wonderfulest children's hospital. So I rearrange my choices and pick Packard for Pediatrics Medical-Surgical.
2. I get placed at Packard!!  Yay!!  BUT they give me a nurse that works on oncology--NOT med-surg.  Taking care of kids with cancer??  I don't get a choice at this point so oh well.
3. Oncology isn't depressing at all!!  And the nurse I worked with (her name's Carly) was absolutely incredible; she had her own fan club on the unit, haha. I LOVE PACKARD.
4. I graduate and can't find work!!  NO ONE wants to give me an interview so I ask Carly to help me get some nurse managers contact information.
5. I contact the nurse managers and they agree to meet with me in 3 months.
6. After 3 months of waiting, I go into the interview which lasts 15-20 minutes.  Eek!!  So short!  And I started talking about cupcakes during the interview, which has nothing to do with nursing!
7. Jan 23rd @ 11:59am, the manager calls and offers me 1 of 2 spots!!  INCREDIBLE.  Of course I screamed wildly. "I feel like I won the lottery!!" *pumped fists in the air*
A whole procession set into play, none of which I had been able to foresee. All I know is that landing a position at Packard is crazy near impossible, and the Lord had a plan. If I had worked at another hospital prior to Packard, I would not have been eligible to work at this *dream* hospital so it worked out that I wasn't able to find work for 10 months. AND I didn't bomb my very first interview. AND that I had Carly, the darling nurse of the unit, to vouch for me. AND there's just so much craziness of how it all led to this...

^my new home

I start March 16th, and I couldn't be any more excited & joyful about this job opportunity!!  ...All thanks to God!!
The day after I got my job offer, I bought a new car, haha, and a whole slew of other things...

I'm happy.

God truly does bless His kiddos that follow faithfully.  Not to mention that 5 years of really HARD work definitely paid off. :)

Some fun stuff that someone wrote about God and work: http://jmm.aaa.net.au/articles/2978.htm

"God blesses hard work and conscientious workers. He doesn't bless bludgers. But on the other hand, he doesn't expect you to work yourself into the ground, or to devote yourself so fully to your paid work that your wife or children are left on the sideline. That's why God initiated the principle of the Sabbath - a rest every seven days. Even God rested on the seventh day after he had created the universe!"

Where the jobs are: Industries with hiring potential
Monday December 8, 10:47 am ET
By Jessica Dickler, CNNMoney.com staff writer

The economy continues to recede, leaving massive job losses in its wake. But while layoffs are widespread, they are not across the board. Some industries are thriving -- and hiring.

On Friday the Labor Department reported that 533,000 jobs were lost in November, which puts the year-to-date layoff total at a whopping 1.9 million. And with the unemployment rate now at 6.7%, job seekers face the worst job market in 15 years.

But it's not all doom and gloom: A range of industries are posting gains in employment figures. Here's a look at them:

Education. With more people out of work and considering new careers, interest in degree programs, certifications and additional training has never been greater.

"Obviously some people will be out of work and see that as a chance to get additional education," said Dean Baker, director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, DC, which will provide support - and jobs - to those in the field.

The education industry already added 9,800 jobs in November, the Labor Department said in its monthly report issued last week, and "there's still a wide range of opportunities available," according to Janette Marx, senior vice president of Ajilon Global, professional staffing firm. "It runs the gamut in the education field" beyond teachers and professors, she added.

In addition to greater demand for educators, also lending support to the sector is government financing, according to Baker. "Education will be an area that governments will try to protect because there's a lot of political support," he said.

Health services. With an aging population and greater demand for care, health services is also adding jobs in a down market.

"The healthcare industry continues to be the healthiest sector in the U.S. job market," said Diana Fitting, vice president for staffing company Adecco. "The Baby Boomer generation is aging and it's helping to keep healthcare growing."

Even in the midst of the economic fallout, healthcare employment grew by 34,000 jobs in November. Over the past 12 months, healthcare has added 369,000 jobs, according to the Labor Department.

"Throughout 2008 the industry has continued to add thousands of new jobs each month despite the broader labor market turmoil -- and this is one trend we don't see ending any time soon," Fitting said.

At the Columbia University School of Nursing's Entry to Practice Program, applications are up 50% from last year. Mary Mundinger, dean of the school, credits the sharp uptick to the promise of relatively lucrative job opportunities and flexible schedules in an otherwise dour job market.

I didn't post the whole story, but in terms of healthcare, there's NOTHING for a kid like me.  LIES, LIES!!!  If you have no experience, you're not landing a job.

OH--MY--GOODNESS.  My server schedule for this week is as follows:  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday AND lunch shifts on Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  WHAAAAAAAAAAAT.  Shabu House has taken over my lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.  Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I REALLY need to nail that interview at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital or I'll be stuck serving shabu shabu forever.  Hire meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

And what's with male customers wanting to take sake shots with their servers??  I say NO, and they just can't leave it at that.  This group of guys even came back towards closing time just to drink with me.  NO means NO.  I ran into the kitchen, and the owner said they wanted to buy me a drink.  Um, you're gonna buy me a drink from work while I'm at work??!!  I need a new job.  -____-

^took a picture with my cousins at our annual let's-celebrate-Christmas-even-though-it's-only-the-first-week-of-December party.  AND what in the world?!  Since when did I start looking like I'm 12?!  Nicole is only 3 years older than me, and Cherelle only 3 years younger.

My boss cracks me up like eggs.

"Diablo time!"  <--when someone he's extremely not fond of is coming into work

"Oh my gawd!  Look at that girl!  ...like a cherry.  She's looks like she's gonna DIE!"  <--literally the color of a cherry

Yes, I'm already sick of work at Shabu House, BUT it's those random laughable comments that make the job bearable.  =)  Can't wait to add more of his comments to my list of two...

^ He reminds me a little of Steve--only Steve is a pastor, and my boss is FAR from being pastor-like...as you can tell from the remarks he makes.

Yes, my boss is harsh, really crude at times, but I appreciate how he takes care of me!

1. He always checks up on me to see if I'm OK while I'm out on the restaurant floor.  "Jackie!  Are you ok?"

2. Always asks me where I parked because he'll walk me to my car if I'm far.  "Where'd you park?"  I don't like the hassle of people walking me to my car so I make a deal to call the restaurant..."If I don't call you within 5 minutes that means I got mugged."

3. Forces me to eat dinner.  "Don't worry about it; I'll take care of it.  Go eat."

4. Protective.  This one customer tried to get me to take a shot of hot sake with him, but I don't drink; he was relentless, and I started having a hard time maintaining polite composure.  Boss saved me after I told him that guy was making me uncomfortable.

and other stuffs that I can't place off the top of my head.  We're getting a new manager next month...I'll be really sad if he's not as anal.
